The most recent census during 2010 reported that the city's population was about 68,000 inhabitants. The City of Santa Fe is the hub of the Santa Fe MSA or Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area accounts for all of Santa Fe County and is also part of the larger Santa Fe-Espanola Combined Statistical Area.

First, Santa Fe was occupied between 1050 and 1150 by various Pueblo Indian villages. Sometime after 900 C.E. one of the earliest known settlements in what is currently downtown Santa Fe was established. A Native American group fashioned a cluster of houses which spread for half a mile towards the west and towards the south. The village was known as Ogapoge and the houses were centered on the location of the present Plaza. The Santa Fe River attracted settlers because it provided water to those who were living there.

The Santa Fe River was a year round stream up until the 1700s, although now it is considered only a seasonal waterway. In 2007, based on the conservation group known as American Rivers, the Santa Fe River was recognized as the country's most endangered river.

The town of Santa Fe served as the gateway to LANL or Los Alamos National Laboratory during the year 1943. The LANL is a 45 minute drive from Santa Fe. The city of Santa Fe is also associated with technology and science. The Santa Fe Institute or also referred to as SFI was founded during 1984 to research complex systems in biological, physical, and political and economic sciences. Santa Fe hosts such Nobel laureates as Murray Gell-Mann and Philip Warren Anderson, both for physics and Kenneth Arrow for economics. In the year 1994, the NCGR or also referred to as National Center for Genome Resources was established in order to concentrate on research with bioscience, bioscience and mathematics.

Some of the key economic factors in the City of Santa Fe consist of tourism and the State government. Santa Fe attracts lots of tourists every year due to the year-round weather and the many outdoor activities. There are a lot of locations to enjoy hiking and lots of skiing during the years of adequate snow. The City of Santa Fe is also home to numerous cultural activities. The chamber of commerce and the visitor bureau both provide tourist information.

The Plaza and the historic downtown locations are mainly where most of the tourist activity happens. The Plaza consists of a one block square which is adjacent to the Palace of the Governors. This is the original seat of New Mexico's territorial government ever since the time of the Spanish migration. The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market occurs on an annual basis during the second full weekend of July at an attraction area referred to as "Museum Hill," that is the location of numerous art museums within Santa Fe. Another popular attraction area for both tourists and locals alike is the Canyon Road Arts region. It is home to various galleries.
